What is Sharia?

  1. Sharia (shari’a), Islamic sharia, Islamic law (Arabic: شريعة‎‎ ) is the religious law. It is derived from the Quran and the Hadith. In Arabic, the term sharīʿah refers to God’s divine law.
  2. The Muslims do not seek to establish Shariyah law in western society. Rather the Muslims support the work to establish Shariyah law in the Muslim world, through establishing the Islamic State.

Shariyah Law is incompatible with secular western law, upon three areas:

Creed/Sovereignty

  • Secularism is established upon the separation of religion and politics and the relegation of god to spiritual and private matters, whilst man is sovereign in life’s affairs.
  • In contrast, Islam is established upon the firm conviction that Allah (God) exists, that there is no separation between sprit and politics and that Allah is Sovereign over all matters.

Criteria

  • Secularism puts personal interest and benefit as the criteria man uses to determine the correctness and legality of actions. In fact, this criterion forces the moral, ethical and spiritual values to become subservient to the material value.
  • In contrast, Islam has made halal and haram the criteria for people to judge the correctness and legality of actions. This criterion is stable and not affected by the whims and desires of individuals. Likewise it ensures that society is cushioned by the presence of all the values and not rendering these obsolete nor subject to the dictates of any one value.

Ruling/Values

  • It is evident that there is considerable divergence in both the values and rulings between secular and Islamic law.
